Autumn

I have to be honest and admit that I'm sort of having trouble moving on and letting go of some of the frustrations and emotions of the summer. It's a major flaw of mine...living in the past rather than the present. So this week, as I was catching up on blogs, I ran into this post of Tracy's and it struck home. It's autumn. One of my favorite times of the year. When temperatures cool down and the air is just crisper and lighter. So in an effort to follow Tracy's path and look forward rather than back...my manifesto...

I am going to look forward to crisp mornings and wearing wool sweaters again. I will return to the oven and bake bread and apple pies and home-made pesto pizza. I will curl up outside with a cup of tea, a blanket draped over my legs and a good book...enjoying the last days when it is warm enough to do this. I will make peach and plum jam and I will savor the last red tomato. I will knit jackets and sweaters and hats and mittens. I will harvest the winter squash, remembering the joys of the garden but rejoicing that it is finally over. I will relish the smell and sound of fall rains. I will take one last trip to the mountains, and I will enjoy waking up to the sun, huddled deep in a sleeping bag with frost melting from the tent. I will cut open a gourd and allow creativity to flow. I will go mushroom picking with the hopes of finding chanterelles. I will take out my camera and capture the gold and orange and red colors of fall. I will not let this season pass me by.

Tell me, what are you looking forward to this season?

**Off to Wyoming for work for a week...when I get back I have an FO to share as well as pictures of a trip to visit friends.

I read your entry and Tracy's and you've both inspired me. Your writing is beautiful and replaces my disappointment over my "wasted" summer with an excited resolve to make the most of autumn in just the same way.

Over the Knee socks I am off to cast them on now :o)

Your manifesto is wonderful and I always think September is a great time to embrace new things and look forward to lovely time to come - it's that back to school new exercise book feeling I think!

Autumn always brings a re-adjustment to life while boy is in school again. More time to focus on my writing and personal work.

Thank you for taking us along on this journey with you - I am drawn to your honesty always.

Well it's always a little bit back to school for me, even though it's been over 10 years since I went to school (eek). I'm going to miss daylight at each end of the day (useful for photography) but I'm looking forward to bonfire night and very crisp chill mornings and oddly enough I like it when the nights draw in, there's something very cozy about being tucked up in a lighted room when it's dark at 4.

Enjoy your trip and bring lots of pretty pictures back!

In the Celtic belief system Samhain (Halloween) is the new year, so autumn has all the energy of preparation. I find that idea helps when I haven't been able to let go of the summer and what I have or have not been able to accomplish. This has the added bonus of allowing for course corrections come January. :)

I hope you have a brilliant autumn.

I always think of Sept as being more of a beginning than Jan but that said, I so live in the past.

Have fun in WY! Take lots of pictures.

Sounds like you will be having a wonderful autumn. I love autumn & winter too but that's over here & we are into spring now.

Beautiful. Travel safely, take care of yourself - I know you will enjoy your Autumn.

Autumn is my favorite season, and I tend to rush into things with renewed enthusiasm and energy as the weather gets cooler... I will think on this one - I've been doing a lot of thinking and writing since returning home, and this fits in quite nicely, thank you for sharing it. I agree with a poppyseed, your writing is beautiful Rachel.

What a lovely post. I love the Fall and the cool days. I will be walking in the leaves, knitting in front of the woodburner and drinking lovely cups of tea!

Awesome post. I look forward to the air turning cooler and that certain smell the air gets. I look forward to Halloween and full, fall moons. The nip in the air that makes you feel alive.

Wow. Now I'm sad it's still in the 80's here. lol

I think autumn is my favorite time of year. I love to wear knits and my Ugg boots and I love when leaves turn a color. Mostly I love running along the river in the fall; you really see that seasons glory. Hope you are having a good week away.

This is a great list! I hope you had a wonderful time in Wyoming, I am jealous!

I made plum jam last week for the first time to use an impulse purchase of some plums, and am so glad I did!

Didn't get much of a summer this year, hopefully we'll get a bit of an Indian summer. So far so good.

Be safe!!
